Anyone who has used tech support for anything today realizes that you no longer need to be near the person you are helping. The same is true for us being able to provide technical support for ministries. If you would like to serve in such a way read how we provide this service in the next section
We Use Tech Support Technology
Technical support is a combination of the technical knowledge of the tech together with a support request ticket management system so that the progress of a request can be managed.
As a tech support person you will need to log in when you want to donate your time. After loging in you simply respond to the trouble tickets as they enter the que. This is just a fledling work so there isn't always a steady flow of tickets coming in or solutions being provided but hopefully usage and service will feed each other to where you will be able to log in and be busy for whatever time you want to work. For now, though, it may simply be a matter of leaving a window open to the ticket admin.
The Linux Thin Server Project>
We do focus on Linux systems, especially the thin server project. If you aren't familiar with it, this is a method for utilizing smaller, older slower PCs into a network (even 486s) and using them pretty much only for their graphics and network capabilities. Their old, small processors perform the graphic display and send the keystrokes and mouse inputs back to the main network server (at their site. The server should be a newer machine so you will be working with both older and newer PCs. If you need to research Linux Thin Clients. You can actually remove the hard drive of a PC and simply boot from floppy or CD to the network, and then use the processor of the server for programs.
